The pictures really don't do these fairy tale newspapers justice. Although Sam and Dean often behave like professional traditional folklorists—not just by doing research, but also in the fact that they are almost always geographic outsiders to the sites they visit—they are actually amateurs, autodidacts with no formal academic training in the field ( note 8 ). (While a number of 19th-century folklorists were themselves amateurs, most of these were clergymen, who were thus distinguished in both education and perceived religious orthodoxy from the folk.) Moreover, the Winchesters—as wandering outlaws and con men, as heroes on a quest, and, on Sam's part, as a possessor of supernatural powers—embody those around whom folklore traditionally collects, rather than the collectors or interpreters themselves ( note 9 ).
