I must admit, the first time I read this poem, which was back in college—eight or so, odd years ago—I had chosen to ignore the accent, thinking ‘resume’ made better sense. Hugo does not make it entirely clear whether it is God or more simply a "good" man who was responsible for this transformation, but either way this encounter changed Valjean's life and attitude toward his fellow men.
